FDN Group proudly contributed to the Sonthaven project in Amsterdam, commissioned by the Municipality of Amsterdam. Project Description
The Sonthaven project focuses on the redevelopment of Amsterdam’s waterfront, enhancing both accessibility and functionality for ships. FDN Group played a key role in the engineering of quay structures, including the ground retaining systems and mooring piles, supporting safe berthing and long-term durability. The project combines urban planning, maritime logistics, and structural integrity to strengthen Amsterdam’s position as a resilient port city.
Challenges of the Project
Working in a busy urban waterfront presented multiple challenges. Limited space, fluctuating water levels, and strict environmental regulations required careful planning and precise execution. Ship loadings on the wall and design of an economical safe quay wall in steel sheet piling was a major challenge. Ensuring stability for both the quay and the vessels, while minimizing disruption to the surrounding community, demanded a comprehensive engineering approach and close coordination with local authorities. This project was successfully completed by FDN in close cooperation with the Municipality of Amsterdam.
