Located in the northern part of Utrecht, the Gagel Bridge is a striking example of contemporary Dutch infrastructure design. FDN carried out the complete engineering services for contractor VBK, delivering both the preliminary and final design stages. The bridge features a distinctive steel truss structure with an orthotropic steel deck, supported by robust concrete piers, abutments, and prefabricated foundations. Project description
The Gagel Bridge connects local communities across a busy canal in Utrecht, providing a vital link for cyclists, pedestrians, and vehicles. Its design harmonizes functionality and aesthetics, ensuring the bridge integrates naturally into the surrounding landscape. Challenges of the project
One of the main challenges was combining a lightweight yet strong superstructure with durable concrete substructures that could be installed with minimal disruption.
