Zeelsterbridge

FDN has designed and engineered slender high-performance concrete (HPC) parapet elements for the Zeelsterbridge in Eindhoven. The bridge was rebuilt due to insufficient bearing capacity, and FDN’s innovative use of HPC enabled the creation of very light yet durable parapet elements. With their elegant form and advanced material use, these elements reflect the perfect balance between strength, efficiency, and design.

Project Description

For the reconstruction of the Zeelsterbridge, FDN developed parapet elements up to 11 metres long and 3 metres high. These elements have a distinctive, complex geometry that integrates seamlessly with the bridge’s architectural design. Using HPC 130, allowed FDN to meet strict weight limitations while maintaining structural integrity and durability.

Challenges of the Project

One of the key challenges was the limited stiffness of the existing bridge deck. Conventional concrete parapets would have been too heavy, exceeding the load capacity of the bridge beams. The solution was to develop ultra-lightweight elements with walls only 50 mm thick. The hollow head, filled with polystyrene blocks, significantly reduced the total weight without compromising on strength or stability.

Sustainability

By using HPC, FDN achieved a substantial reduction in material volume while extending the structure’s lifespan. The high strength and durability of HPC minimize maintenance and replacement needs, reducing the environmental footprint over time. Lightweight design also lowers transport and installation energy consumption, aligning with sustainable construction goals.

Innovation & Technology

The Zeelsterbridge parapets represent a breakthrough in lightweight bridge design. The use of HPC 130  enabled an unprecedented combination of slenderness and strength. Advanced engineering techniques, precision molding, and smart integration of materials such as polystyrene core created a solution that is both technically and aesthetically advanced. This innovative design earned FDN a nomination for the Dutch Concrete Award 2017.

FDN’s Contribution

FDN was responsible for the full engineering and execution of the parapet elements. From structural design and material optimization to production and assembly, FDN ensured that every detail met the highest standards of performance and quality. Their expertise in HPC design made it possible to push the boundaries of what is structurally and aesthetically possible.

Partners

FDN collaborated closely with the client, contractors, and material specialists to ensure successful realization. This teamwork and shared focus on innovation led to a project that not only met but exceeded expectations in design, performance, and sustainability.
