Floating breakwater marina NDSM Amsterdam

The NDSM Floating Breakwater in Amsterdam represents a bold step in yacht marina protection. Designed to safeguard the HISWA Noord area, this innovative structure reduces the impact of waves on the harbor and surrounding neighborhoods. FDN Group supported the project through engineering and layout design, ensuring optimal performance for 1.5-metre waves while maintaining hydrodynamic stability and effective anchorage. This project demonstrates the integration of advanced engineering, sustainability, and technological innovation in modern urban water infrastructure.

Project Description

The NDSM Floating Breakwater is a modular structure designed to protect the marina from wind and ship wave action. The breakwater consists of interconnected floating elements 600 metres total length that dampen wave energy before it reaches the marina. Its layout and dimensions were carefully calculated to maximize effectiveness while minimizing environmental impact. This system ensures a safer, more resilient waterfront for the Amsterdam community.

Challenges of the Project

Designing a floating breakwater in an active harbor presented several challenges. Engineers had to consider fluctuating water levels, strong wave forces, and the need for stability under dynamic conditions. Additionally, anchoring the structure in soft soil required precise planning to prevent drift while allowing for flexibility in response to changing water conditions. Ensuring minimal disruption to local marine traffic was another key consideration.

Sustainability

Sustainability was central to the project’s design. The breakwater uses durable materials with a long service life, reducing maintenance needs and environmental impact. Its modular design allows for reconfiguration or relocation if necessary, minimizing waste and promoting adaptive use of resources. The project supports Amsterdam’s commitment to resilient and eco-friendly waterfront infrastructure.

Innovation & Technology

The NDSM Floating Breakwater showcases advanced engineering and innovative solutions. Hydrodynamic modeling determined the optimal size and layout of floating elements to efficiently dampen waves up to 1.5 metres. The structure combines stability with flexibility, while monitoring systems can track performance over time. This project highlights how technology can enhance both safety and functionality.

FDN’s Contribution

FDN Group played a crucial role in bringing the floating breakwater to life. Our team provided expertise in engineering, hydrodynamics, and layout design. We calculated wave loading, determined optimal floating element sizes, and advised on anchoring systems to ensure stability and durability. FDN’s involvement guaranteed a solution that meets both technical requirements and community needs.

Partners

The project was realized in collaboration with local authorities the Municipality of Amsterdam, marine engineers, and construction partners. Together, these stakeholders ensured the breakwater was delivered efficiently, safely, and in line with Amsterdam’s vision for resilient waterfronts.
