Floating Cruise Terminal Isle of Man

A new floating cruise terminal is planned to be built in Port Douglas on Isle of Man. Due to difficult sea conditions, seabed profile, location and high demands to preserve local eco-system, a solution with a floating terminal has been chosen. The terminal will provide both berthing of large ships and protection against waves coming from open sea. In order to accommodate large cruise ships, such as “Allure of the seas”, the floating body is designed as 350m long and 25m wide. The large width is also necessary for damping of the waves, which have significant height of 4.5m in the area. In this sense, the terminal works also as a breakwater.  The floating breakwater facilitates all amenities, which terminal should have, such as offices, departure and arrival hall, supplying roads and large parking for 600 cars. The parking will be situated inside the hollow body of the breakwater in three levels. The main floating body is made of concrete. In order to reduce material consumption and increase durability of the whole structure, high-strength concrete has been chosen as a convenient alternative.

Project Description

The project focuses on designing a floating cruise terminal capable of accommodating 350-metre-long cruise ships. This terminal, integrated into the breakwater, will offer docking, passenger access, and supporting facilities while maintaining the functionality of the harbour. FDN carried out a detailed feasibility study, including site visits, hydrodynamic simulations, and layout optimization, to ensure a robust, safe, and functional terminal.

Challenges of the Project

The design had to address several technical challenges, including:

  • Damping waves up to 6 metres high and 1 metre in the inner harbour.
  • Ensuring hydrodynamic stability of large floating elements.
  • Designing secure anchorage and mooring systems for long-term operation.
  • Integrating parking and passenger access without compromising structural integrity.

Sustainability

Sustainability was central to the design approach. The floating terminal minimizes disruption to the natural harbour environment and allows for future adaptability. Energy-efficient solutions and careful material selection ensure that the structure meets environmental standards and supports the island’s long-term tourism growth responsibly.

Innovation & Technology

The project applies advanced engineering techniques and hydrodynamic modeling to determine the optimal size and configuration of floating elements. Innovative solutions include the combination of breakwater functionality with passenger facilities, wave damping technologies, and modular construction for efficient deployment and maintenance.

FDN Group led the feasibility study, engineering analysis, and conceptual design, providing expert guidance on layout, stability, wave loading, and anchorage solutions. Our work ensures a practical, safe, and economically viable floating terminal design that meets the municipality’s objectives.
