In the peaceful landscape of Etzenrade’s natural park in the South of The Netherlands, FDN Group brought innovation and design together through the construction of three elegant pedestrian bridges. Using FDN’s Ultrabridge technology and Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC C130), the bridges combine strength, slenderness, and sustainability—reflecting FDN’s vision to create smarter, longer-lasting, and more beautiful infrastructure solutions.
Project Description
The Etzenrade Bridges are a striking example of how advanced engineering can blend seamlessly with nature. Designed and built by FDN Group, the three bridge decks—each up to ten metres length and 3.5 metres width and a deck thickness of 80 mm—connect walking paths across the park’s serene landscape. Their refined design and minimal visual footprint make them a natural extension of the environment, offering visitors both function and aesthetic appeal.
Challenges of the Project
Working within a natural park demanded sensitivity and precision. Limited accessibility, strict environmental requirements, and the desire for visually light structures called for an inventive approach. FDN’s expertise ensured that every stage—from design to installation—respected the natural surroundings while maintaining the highest technical and aesthetic standards. The light decks were lifted up to a distance of 50 metres with mobile cranes.
Sustainability
Sustainability guided every decision. The use of UHPC allowed for exceptionally slender structures that require less material and deliver a much longer lifespan than traditional concrete. Prefabrication minimized environmental disturbance, while low maintenance needs ensure long-term efficiency. The result is a set of bridges that not only serve today but will endure for generations.

At the heart of this project lies FDN’s patented Ultrabridge technology—a proven solution for lightweight, durable, and rapidly installed bridge decks. By combining the strength of UHPC with smart modular design, the Ultrabridge system offers a cleaner, faster, and more sustainable way to build. The Etzenrade Bridges demonstrate how technology and craftsmanship come together to shape the future of civil engineering. We managed to fulfill to the Eurocode 2 requirements sustaining a low deck weight.
